Meet Chef
Mark McEwan
Chef Mark McEwan, the “father of modern Canadian cuisine” who helped shape Toronto’s dining scene with celebrated restaurants including ONE, North44, Bymark, Fabbrica, Diwan, and most recently, The Port Tavern Thornbury.
His career began as executive chef at Toronto’s Sutton Place Hotel, where he became the youngest chef in Canada to hold the role and had the honour of cooking for Pope John Paul II during his 1984 visit. He went on to open North44 and later launched McEwan Catering, as well as a portfolio of acclaimed restaurants recognised by the Miele Guide, OpenTable, and Toronto Life Magazine.
Inspired by global food halls, he also introduced McEwan Groceries, now with two Toronto locations. Today, Chef McEwan mentors the next generation of culinary talent, shares his expertise through bestselling cookbooks, and serves as head judge on Food Network’s Top Chef.
